What is it?
A soil-borne fungus that attacks many of our native plants, eventually killing them.
What does it do to our native orchids?
It is not known whether it actually attacks orchids, but it does kill associated plants, resulting in a change to the orchid habitat.
What can be done to control it?
At this point in time there is no known treatment.
What can you do to prevent its spread?
Avoid walking or driving through areas known to have the fungus.
Keep your boots and vehicle clean to help prevent spreading the fungus
PHYTOCLEAN KITS
To assist in the prevention of the spread
of Phytophthora cinnamomi (Cinnamon Fungus) between
orchid sites, A.N.O.S. Victoria provides
members with a 500ml bottle of
Phytoclean concentrate from the Society’s
conservation funds.
From the concentrate 5 litres of
solution can be made up. All you need to supply is a hand spray bottle. This can then be used to spray the soles
of your boots before walking through the bush. This procedure
will be most effective if any dirt is cleaned off the boots before
spraying.
If you would like a bottle of Phytoclean please contact our Conservation Officer Garry French.

TERRESTRIAL STUDY GROUPThe Terrestrial Study Group meets periodically, usually at least once a month and more often at peak flowering times. Trips to search for orchids in the wild are organised within the state of Victoria and occasionally interstate. These expeditions may be for one day, a weekend or sometimes longer. Occasionally the Terrestrial Study Group will combine their activities with other groups where their activities overlap. All members are welcome to join these trips. Members get the opportunity to walk in the bush, see and photograph orchids in their natural environment, while enjoying the social companionship of fellow orchid lovers. |
